Lobitos: the surf town south of Máncora, near Talara
Long waves, steady wind, and a feel very different from Máncora — what Lobitos is, who it's for, and how to get there from the region's airports.
Lobitos is a different world. Almost at Talara already, this surf town has long, powerful waves, wind that blows almost every day, and a raw feel very different from Máncora’s.
An oil town, now a surf town
Lobitos has an unusual industrial history for a beach town: it was an oil settlement from the early 20th century, and piers and structures from that era still line the coast — these days sharing the shoreline with surfboards instead of oil barrels. It’s part of what gives Lobitos a character you won’t find anywhere else on the northern coast.
Who Lobitos is for
Lobitos is a destination for experienced surfers and kitesurfers, drawn by long, powerful waves and wind that’s almost guaranteed most of the year. It’s not the beach for a first surf lesson — La Punta in Máncora is far more forgiving for that — but for anyone who already knows how to paddle and wants more demanding conditions, it’s one of northern Peru’s benchmarks.
Few services, plenty of character
Unlike Máncora, Lobitos still has little tourist infrastructure: accommodation is mostly surf camps and simple hostels, built for people who come to surf rather than for luxury. There are fewer restaurants and less nightlife, but also fewer people in the water.
How to get there
Unlike Vichayito and Los Órganos, for Lobitos it’s worth looking at Talara airport first: given its location, it’s usually the shortest ride of the region’s three airports. Details for Talara, Piura, and Tumbes are in our guide to getting to Máncora — for Lobitos, Talara has the extra advantage of being close by.
In short
- Surf town with long waves and steady wind nearly year-round
- Oil-town history visible in piers and structures along the coast
- Built for experienced surfers and kitesurfers, not beginners
- Talara is the most convenient airport to use
