Máncora is arguably the best place in Peru to learn to surf. La Punta is a long, mellow point break, the water never drops below 70°F (21°C), and there are schools for every level just steps from the beach. If this is your first time on a board, here’s what you need to know.

What to expect from your first lesson

A typical beginner lesson runs 1 to 2 hours and includes a board, a wetsuit if needed, and an instructor who’s with you in the water, not just watching from the sand. Máncora’s wave is mellow and long enough that most people manage to stand up at least once in their first lesson — not a guarantee, but the conditions help more than almost anywhere else in Peru.

How much it costs

The normal range in Máncora runs S/60-150 per lesson, or per day of gear rental (roughly $18-45 USD), depending on the school and whether it’s a private or group lesson. Prices can shift by season — for the most current number, the best move is to message the school directly on WhatsApp.
